Breakup Anthems: Music for the Heartache In Search of an Argument Gang

It was a night of nostalgia, heartbreak and a lot of opinions on our latest podcast episode. We took a deep dive into the beautiful, messy world of breakup songs—those anthems that have helped us all through times of love lost and emotional upheaval. From Neil Sedaka's timeless classic to Bonnie Raitt's soulful resignations, we explored the spectrum of musical heartache.

🎶 Breaking Up Is Hard... and Big Business
We kicked things off with Neil Sedaka's Breaking Up is Hard to Do, a song that's both iconic and versatile, with versions ranging from peppy pop to mellow reflections. Jim couldn't resist pointing out that breaking up is indeed not just hard—it’s big business. John dreamed about the disco ball spinning!

🌟 Careless Whispers, or Careless Lyrics?
Was Careless Whisper by George Michael really a breakup song? It turns out not everyone in our crew thinks so! John assumed it was about the dangers of gossip, while Jim insisted it was all about cheating and the guilt that follows. We're still divided on this one, but we did agree that "guilty feet have got no rhythm" is one heck of a line.

🔥 Four Stages of Grief... In Song Form
Shelly brought the fire with Avril Lavigne’s My Happy Ending, adding some well-needed angst to the mix. From Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone to Nico Case’s quiet contemplation, our panel agreed—these breakup anthems cover everything from rage to bittersweet resignation. We decided that breakup songs are like the five stages of grief. (Peg is still unconvinced, but hey, you try debating Jim when he's in full podcast mode!)

💃 Dancing Through the Pain
We laughed, we swayed, we argued about who could scream Kelly Clarkson’s lyrics the loudest. Spoiler: it wasn’t Shelly this time. Whether it’s dancing alone, letting the anger out, or finding peace after the storm, these songs are there to get you through it. And don't worry, we had plenty to say about Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive—both the disco classic and the Cake version, which, according to Peg, has a special kind of "eff-you energy."

🎤 Bruce, Heim, and History Boys... Oh My!
We ended the night with Bruce Springsteen's One Step Up and Heim's The Wire, each exploring the complexity of fading love. And Jim took us on a journey into the melancholic life of Lorenz Hart, making the case that even our happiest songs can have a tinge of sadness behind them.

If you're a fan of classic breakup songs or just enjoy watching (or hearing) us argue about music with too much coffee in our systems, this one's for you. Dive into our episode and find out which breakup song you might be missing on your playlist.

Stay tuned for the next episode, where we either go deeper into the world of breakup songs or finally analyze why Shelly has a soft spot for CeeLo Green. It's truly anyone's guess at this point.
